Since the launch of operations in Melbourne in 2014 we’ve been on an incredible journey that has seen us continuously expand our food rescue activities, launch new initiatives, roll out events and hit some fantastic milestones! We’ve grown to having five food rescue vans on the road, which service the greater Melbourne area. Our amazing logistics team and drivers are responsible for the collection of an ever-growing quantity of rescued food, with July 2017 seeing over 1,000 tonnes redistributed since inception. This equates to over 3 million meals delivered to those in need through our 85 charities.
The fantastic team is supported by our amazing yellow-shirted volunteers, who assist with everything from event fundraising, van runs, office administration, education programs and kitchen activities! With their help we’ve been able to raise funds at a Bruce Springsteen concert, feed 4,000 people at our Think.Eat.Save event, run an ever-growing number of Cooking for a Cause sessions and much more. We’re always looking to expand the OzHarvest family, so if you’re keen to help out come along to one of our volunteer information evenings!
In 2017 we opened the doors to our very own OzHarvest Kitchen, located in Port Melbourne. The large facility includes both a fully equipped kitchen and a communal dining area, making it the ideal space for corporate team building and experience days via our Cooking for a Cause program.
Melbourne’s NEST program assists disadvantaged communities through the delivery of nutrition education, basic cooking skills and learnings on a range of relevant topics, including healthy eating on a budget, reducing food waste and the components of a balanced diet. NEST is one of our pillar activities for education with the aim of facilitating long-term positive change in peoples’ lives.
