OzHarvest Adelaide began in January 2011 with our first food rescue vehicle called Primrose! You can now see 5 yellow vans on the road – with the addition of Buttercup, Marigold, Daisy and Lily – rescuing food 7 days a week across the geographic area from the Barossa Valley in the North to Victor Harbor in the South.

Since inception we have rescued an amazing 6.5 million meals, and we now average 50 tonnes of good surplus food per month which is being delivered to more than 130 charitable agencies. Our move in 2016 to a new premises in Bowden with warehousing, cool room and pallet storage dramatically increased our capacity and the efficiency of our services.

Our sensational team of office staff and drivers are supported by an army of 250+ volunteers who give their time and talents to our operations through admin support, container washing, events, logistics and our amazing weekend market teams at the Adelaide Central Market, Adelaide Showground Farmers Market and Barossa Farmers Market.

We are also proud to facilitate the NEST and Nourish education programs and the Cooking for a Cause ‘team building with social impact’ engagement program here in Adelaide. Our key events are the iconic national Think.Eat.Save where we feed 2,500 people each year at the University of Adelaide in July and our locally grown The Great Food Rescue Race, a foodie footrace around the Adelaide CBD in November!

Great Food Rescue Race raises over $70,000

Adelaide CBD was a buzz of activity as twenty teams from local businesses raced to the finish line in The Great Food Rescue Race. The day was packed with creative cooking, food rescue and tasting challenges, teamwork tests and fundraising goals. Over $70,000 was raised which will help OzHarvest provide 140,000 meals to people in need.

Beating the heat, competitors got stuck into making sauerkraut from surplus cabbage at Adelaide Central Markets, creating a recipe book at Common Ground, identifying foraged food at The Henry Austin, blindfolded mindful eating at the Hilton, rescuing food from OTR outlets and conjuring up Christmas leftover ideas using South Australian produce.

OzHarvest SA State Manager, Hayley Everuss, says the second Great Food Rescue Race was a great success and the fundraising efforts of each team was truly phenomenal.

“The Great Food Rescue Race is fast-paced, exciting and inspiring for all involved. Although it’s a day of fun, it highlights the importance of redistributing surplus food to help people in need. Thanks to all the teams who took part today, OzHarvest will be able to provide 140,000 meals to vulnerable Australians” said Hayley.

There were three winning categories, which included:

  • Highest fundraisers – OTR’s Awesome Golden Whoppers
  • Highest point score – Woolworths Southern Champions
  • Fastest team – Woolworths Southern Champions

Team Haycom competitor, Adam Chesters who raced in a full body yellow lycra suit, said every team challenge was fun and educational. “We tasted green ants, it was incredible and I never fully appreciated the sheer quantity of food wasted each year, a staggering 4 million tonnes ends up in landfill,” said Adam.

After an exhausting race, competitors, volunteers and event supporters enjoyed delicious South Australian food generously donated by Saskia Beer and prepared by OzHarvest’s Nourish students while listening to amazing live music from Angela Easson.

Happy National Volunteer Week!

Did you know that there are 6 million volunteers in Australia? OzHarvest is one of the many organisations around the country where volunteers play a vital role in our daily operations. Thanks to our wonderful network of volunteers we can keep on growing our capacity to rescue and deliver food and connect with our community. What better time to give our volunteers that extra bit of attention and love, than now during National Volunteer Week themed Give Happy Live Happy.

Within our local OzHarvest Adelaide team we currently have 175 registered volunteers and this number is always growing. Our volunteers are a diversely talented bunch of people who share a common passion for reducing food waste and giving back to the community.

Our team of volunteers contribute to every program that we deliver in and around Adelaide. You will see their faces and meet them at our programs including NEST (Nutrition Education and Sustenance Training) and Cooking for a Cause. You will see them rescuing food from the Adelaide Central Market, the Adelaide Showground Farmers Market and People’s Market on weekends. You will also see them supporting the collection and redistribution of food alongside our drivers each day of the week. If you are ever within our central office in Goodwood you may even meet volunteers who provide time to support with administration tasks, logistics or container washing ready for the next food rescue.

Our volunteers also generously provide time to engage with the community at events including Tasting Australia, Gorgeous Festival, Restaurant & Catering Awards, our annual Tree of Goodness at Adelaide Central Market, the yearly Volunteering SA & NT BBQ during National Volunteer Week and so much more…. They enthusiastically spread our OzHarvest messages of eliminating hunger and reducing food waste and inspire other people to get involved, donate time or money, or review their own food waste habits at home.

On average volunteers contribute about 310 hours a month to our organisation. In 2014 alone our Adelaide team of volunteers contributed an extraordinary 4600 hours of their time. We are so incredibly grateful for the work that all our wonderful volunteers do for us! Plus all the love, energy and passion they share. OzHarvest wouldn’t be the same without all these committed beautiful people supporting us.

Richard Collins from Jarvis Toyota and Joanna Collins from A Touch of Beauty have been supporters of OzHarvest for quite some time! As an OzHArvest Ambassador Joanna has participated in the CEO CookOff, donates auction items and shares the OzHarvest love! Richard has played a major role in securing the third vehicle for OzHarvest Adelaide. As a thank you for their ongoing support we asked them to tell us what motivates them to support OzHarvest:

“Jarvis Toyota believes companies should be good corporate citizens; it is their responsibility to play an active role in the communities they represent. Unfortunately, too many are keen to take from the community but not put back. 

With so many charities to choose from we have settled on a small number which we feel are the most worthy and where we can make a significant contribution. My wife Joanna is a proud Ambassador for OzHarvest, we both admire the wonderful work OzHarvest is doing and in particular, the passion and effort of Ronni Kahn, CEO and founder. We were pleased to involve Jarvis Toyota by way of donating a new Toyota Hi-Ace Van to assist in the food collection and distribution to support OzHarvest.

Foodbank SA and OzHarvest SA supporting each other to feed people in need

Since our friends Foodbank SA opened the new Fruit and Vegetable facility at the Adelaide Produce Market, there has been a growing collaboration between our two organisations.

Twice a week Foodbank delivers beautiful produce to our premises in Goodwood, to distribute to our network of charities – you can see a picture above of 800kg of oranges delivered yesterday!

“Working together in this sector is so important”, says Hayley, State Manager at OzHarvest in Adelaide, “it’s just wonderful that we can share resources with Foodbank SA and together fight food waste and support those people in our community that need it most, while reducing carbon emissions at the same time.”

“It’s a fantastic collaboration that we are incredibly grateful for,” said Hayley. “We hope we will keep on working together on feeding the people in need, in this world of plenty.”

50,000 Meals delivered since launch Marigold!

Since we welcomed ‘Marigold’ to the OzHarvest family of food rescue vehicles just under two months ago, we have already delivered 50,000 meals to people in need in the area South of Adelaide. Such a great start!

We now deliver food to 14 charities down South, including the Salvation Army in Noarlunga, Aldinga Beach Children’s Centre and Re-Engage Youth Services in Christies Beach.

Thank you so much to all the food donors supporting us in preventing food waste and spreading goodness! Some of our fabulous donors are Colonnades Shopping Centre retailers, Home Grain Bakery, Fruit Loopz, Moana Heights IGA Fresh, Serafino and so many more. Without your support we couldn’t deliver so much goodness to people in need.

The launch of the third van on 28 August happened short after we celebrated a huge milestone of delivering the equivalent of 2 million meals in central and northern Adelaide. The addition of Marigold enables us to provide a truly city-wide food rescue service and a new milestone is likely to follow shortly!

3232 meals donated through Garden of Goodness during #MarketWeek Adelaide

From the 2nd to the 7th of September it was Market Week in the Adelaide Central Market (ACM). Aimed at inviting the community to rediscover the Market, the ACM collaborated with traders, producers and small businesses to provide the community with tours, cooking classes, tastings, super specials, music and much more!

Of course OzHarvest Adelaide was part of the fun! We installed our beautiful Garden of Goodness where market visitors could ‘plant’ a Vegie Card into our garden beds for every donation made or merchandise sold. Our wonderful volunteers shared the OzHarvest love and encouraged the festival-goers to help fight food waste by donating and planting their own veggies to represent the meals they saved. The Garden of Goodness started completely empty at the first day of the festival, but after four days the ‘garden’ grew significantly!

For every donation or merchandise sold $1 represents two meals that OzHarvest can rescue. Thanks to all the generous donations of the market visitors by the end of day four we could rescue 3,232 meals!

What better way to celebrate the first week of Spring!
