Established in 2014, REAP Cairns is a team of 30, passionate and committed volunteers preventing food waste and hunger in FNQ. In 2 years, REAP Cairns has prevented over 60 tonnes of quality surplus food from being wasted – the equivalent of 180,000 meals – that were instead delivered to 17 local charities and schools who provide food relief for the vulnerable in our community.
REAP Cairns has received overwhelming support from local businesses such as Rusty’s Markets, Mungalli Creek Dairy, Gate Gourmet, Novotel Oasis, Pacific Hotel, Harrison’s and NuNu Restaurants and the Cairns Regional Council who agree that good food should not be wasted while hunger exists in our community.
As part of a long term solution to reducing food insecurity amongst individuals in FNQ, REAP Cairns has delivered OzHarvest’s NEST program which provides nutritional education and basic cooking skills to those who may face food insecurity.
REAP Cairns regularly engages the community in issues of food waste and food security at events such as the Eco Fiesta, Carnival on Collins and Tastes of Port Douglas. This year, REAP Cairns joined 10 other OzHarvest and REAP chapters around the country to host a Think.Eat.Save event.
