OzHarvest CEO CookOff helps to deliver 3.4 million meals to feed Aussies in need

The combined culinary skills and fundraising efforts of Australia’s top chefs and CEOs came to fruition last night as close to $1.7 million was raised at OzHarvest’s CEO CookOff held at The Cutaway, Barangaroo. The fundraising total will allow OzHarvest to deliver 3.4 million meals to help feed vulnerable people across Australia.

Over one thousand special guests from charitable agencies supported by OzHarvest enjoyed a variety of gourmet meals prepared and served by teams of CEOs under the guidance of celebrity chefs, Neil Perry, Matt Moran, Peter Gilmore and Paul Carmichael to name a few.

The competitive nature of the CEOs saw the fundraising leader board changing right up to the last minute.  In the end, Andrew Chapman, Managing Director of Merchant Group, pipped Clive Burcham, CEO of The Conscience Organisation, to the post raising a staggering $125,714.

“The vibe of the night was unbelievable. Taking the time to sit down with the guests last night and to understand their journey was incredibly humbling and a great reminder that those in a position to give, should,” said Andrew.

OzHarvest Founder and CEO, Ronni Kahn said the flagship fundraiser allows OzHarvest to rescue and redistribute more fresh food, helping to feed people in need at over 900 charities across Australia. Two million people seek food relief each year and many agencies say they could take double to meet demand.

“The face of hunger is diverse and it’s never quite who you think.  For one night, CEOs, business leaders and chefs unite to make a positive impact on the lives of those less fortunate.  It was truly a night to remember, full of love, humility, dignity and respect. That is the magic of the CEO CookOff,” said Ronni.

Guests were treated to a surprise performance from Aussie music legend, Jimmy Barnes, who performed well-known songs including ‘Working Class Man’ and ‘Khe Sanh’. Popular radio hosts, Rove McManus and Sam Frost, MC’d the evening.

The OzHarvest CEO CookOff returns in 2017!

The OzHarvest CEO CookOff will return for its 6th year on Monday 6th March with Australia’s CEOs, Managing Directors and business leaders joining forces with 40 of the country’s best chefs to feed over 1,000 Sydneysiders in need.

Some big names in the restaurant business will be returning including Matt Moran (ARIA), Neil Perry (Rockpool), Guillaume Brahimi (Bistro Guillaume) and Peter Gilmore (Quay). They’ll be joined by new faces like Morgan McGlone (Belles Hot Chicken), Federico Zanellato (LuMi Bar and Dining) and Paul Carmichael (Momofuku Seiobo).

Chefs and CEOs at the flagship fundraising event will create a three-course feast to feed vulnerable Aussies, raise much needed funds and highlight the issue of food insecurity, homelessness and food wastage.

The 2016 event broke all records raising an incredible $1.6 million nationally, which helped provide more than three million meals to those who need it most.  The 2017 CEO CookOff aims to be the biggest yet with a fundraising target of $2 million to allow OzHarvest to provide 4 million meals around Australia.

Rockpool Foundation to the rescue with OzHarvest

Rockpool Foundation and Neil Perry have furthered their commitment in the fight against food waste by donating a brand new refrigerated van and driver to OzHarvest, Australia’s leading food rescue organisation, helping reduce the amount of good food going to landfill.

The generous donation will allow OzHarvest to rescue an additional 500 kilos of surplus food every day, which equates to around 400,000 meals a year to help feed people in need.

The OzHarvest and Rockpool Foundation van will include a daily run to the airport to collect surplus food from domestic flights at the Qantas Catering Centre, which will then be delivered directly to charity agencies in the local area.

OzHarvest CEO and Founder, Ronni Kahn said every kilogram of food that can be rescued saves perfectly edible food from ending up in landfill, which not only protects the environment but helps make a positive difference to the lives of those less fortunate.

“When I called Neil Perry twelve years ago to ask him to donate food to my start up charity, he immediately said yes. I’ve called him many times since then, and he has always risen to the challenge.”

“OzHarvest is totally philanthropically funded and relies on the support of organisations like Rockpool Foundation to keep the wheels turning, in this case literally. We love that Neil and his Foundation are industry leaders in giving back so significantly to the community.”

Neil Perry is a passionate champion of the cause and Rockpool Foundation is dedicated to supporting community based charities helping to change people’s lives for the better.

The Rockpool Foundation vehicle joins the fleet of 37 OzHarvest vans collecting over 87 tonnes of rescued food each week from more than 2,000 businesses including supermarkets, restaurants, cafes, hotels, retailers, airports and food outlets. The quality surplus food is then delivered to more than 900 charities helping to make a positive difference to the lives of men, women and children across Australia.

Sydney’s leading chefs will join food rescue charity OzHarvest to feed 5,000 members of the public a free “rescued” meal at Martin Place on Monday, 25 July from 11.30am – 2.30pm at the fourth annual Think.Eat.Save event partnered with the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP).

Join top chefs from Neil Perry’s Rockpool Group, Matt Moran’s ARIA Catering, The Star, BlackStar Pastry and SumoSalad who have created delicious menus from “rescued” food items showcasing their creative culinary talent!

Enjoy Rockpool’s rescued beef and lemongrass meatballs with rice and pickled veg, The Star’s Milli Julli Sabji surplus veggie spiced tomato curry, ARIA’s sustainably sourced hot dogs with bacon jam, Sumo Salad’s wintery soups and for dessert indulge in BlackStar Pastry’s Trim Trifle Twist using the odds and ends from their famous “Strawberry & Watermelon Cake”.

Hear from a live panel discussion from food industry experts on food waste, food security and sustainability, see how mushrooms are grown from ground coffee waste at the Fungimental Garden of Goodness, learn some food saving tips from Glad, and enjoy healthy and delicious fruit from the Woolworths’ Odd Bunch range.

Think.Eat.Save events taking place nationwide will see some of the nation’s top chefs, business leaders, politicians and celebrities unite to address the urgent issue of food waste, which is currently costing Australians up to $8 billion each year.

Partnering with the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), OzHarvest is urging Australians to take action on food waste.

Founder and CEO of OzHarvest, Ronni Kahn, said the aim of Think.Eat.Save 2016 is to bring attention to the alarming amount of food wasted in Australia and around the world, where roughly one third of food produced for human consumption (approx. 1.3 billion tonnes) is wasted or lost along the way.

“The current global and local food waste statistics are alarming,” Ms Kahn said. “We urgently need change to happen now to ensure a sustainable food system for future generations. This year at Think.Eat.Save we are urging Australians to make a dish using their leftovers, giving life to food that would otherwise have been wasted.

“These small efforts to reduce food waste create positive change and inspire others to take action about the urgent issue of food waste and food security.”

Members of the public are encouraged to get involved by making a personal pledge to change their eating behaviour and reduce food waste via the #PledgeAPlate campaign. You can pledge a plate by making a meal out of leftovers, rescued or saved ingredients, taking a photo and uploading it on social media with the hashtag #PledgeAPlate and fundraise via www.pledgeaplate.com.

To mark the national Australian campaign to reduce food waste, OzHarvest will host 11 events across the country, feeding over 15,000 thousand people a free, delicious and hearty hot meal made from rescued produce and educating people about reducing food waste.
