Heritage Bank Helps Fight Food Waste

by OzAdmin

Heritage Bank stopped shoppers at Westfield Garden City Shopping Centre Brisbane in their tracks with a creative display of typically wasted food… 312kg to be exact! Helping to raise awareness about Australian household food waste which equates to 2.5 million tonnes of food , and can cost the average family  up to $2,500 each year!

Heritage Bank created the installation, running over three days, to show Aussies how much food is wasted at home and urging them to fight food waste in their own kitchens, saving food, money, and the planet. The display featured information giveaways and kids’ activities, as well as Heritage’s mascot, the giant-sized Priscilla the Pig!

OzHarvest Queensland Engagement Manager, Michaela Windsor, was on hand to speak with people about fighting food waste. “It’s shocking to think that 70% of the food we waste is perfectly edible, while there are still so many people who go hungry. Reducing food waste at home is something everyone can do and is crucial to achieving the national goal of halving food waste by 2030. The display by Heritage Bank really helped people understand the issue and sparked many great conversations. No food went to waste as the whole display was donated to OzHarvest and delivered to people doing it tough across Brisbane!”

The installation marked the first anniversary of Heritage Bank’s partnership with OzHarvest. Heritage CEO Peter Lock said this was the perfect way to mark the occasion. “We know from OzHarvest that food waste is a $36.6 billion problem in Australia each year, while around 5.5 million people experience food insecurity.”

“Our partnership with OzHarvest helps stop good food going to waste and makes sure it goes to people in need. Over the past year, this partnership delivered an additional 200,000 meals to vulnerable Australians, and prevented 126,666kg of greenhouse emissions from going into the environment.”

In Brisbane, OzHarvest has nine trucks on the road every week rescuing 30,000kg of good food from going to landfill. Which supports more than 140 charities across Brisbane, Ipswich, Logan, Redlands, Caboolture and everywhere in between.
