Food Rescue
OzHarvest Brisbane opened its doors in 2014 with one van. Now with a fleet of 9 vans, the team rescues more than 25,000kg of food every week, which equates to 55,000 meals delivered to people in need throughout Brisbane.


Food Relief during COVID
To meet the rise in demand for food relief due to COVID-19, the Brisbane team introduced two new initiatives, Food Hampers and cooked meals produced by local ‘Hospitality Heroes’. From July to October 2020, the hamper program saw nearly 20,000 hampers created and distributed to people in need. Our hospitality friends from Victoria Park Golf Course, Australian Catering Services and Pawpaw Café, created more than 7,200 meals for vulnerable communities between June and August.
Food relief has been extended to support 12 new charities, with purchased food supplementing rescued food for the first time ever. Fresh produce has also been sourced from wholesalers impacted by the hospitality downturn in QLD and Northern NSW.


Volunteer
Our yellow army is made up of approximately 250 volunteers in Brisbane, contributing over 8,000 hours per year! Volunteer activities include (but are not limited to): assisting our drivers with food rescue in our yellow vans; helping out with community events and Cooking for a Cause corporate classes; assisting with practical session delivery of our NEST and FEAST programs; and other education roles.
The majority of our volunteering opportunities are based out of our Salisbury warehouse and Rocklea kitchen, and occur Monday to Friday during business hours. If you are interested in joining the Brisbane team, please click the button below.


FEAST
FEAST (Food Education and Sustainability Training) is a curriculum aligned program aimed at year 5 and 6 students. FEAST runs for 7-10 weeks and is a STEM project-based learning program focusing on food and sustainability. The teacher-led program can be adapted and changed to suit your school’s needs.
Like any good FEAST, it’s designed to be fun, engaging and filled with good food.


NEST
OzHarvest’s NEST program is an easy and fun way to learn healthy eating habits and how to cook simple and low-cost meals in just six weeks. Each NEST session is held at the same day and time each week for 2.5 hours. It includes fun interactive activities, practical cooking classes, and the sharing of a meal together.
OzHarvest NEST is aligned with the Australian Dietary Guidelines and works with everyone to set realistic goals around healthy eating, which are reviewed and revised each week, so real and lasting change can be made.


Cooking for a Cause
OzHarvest’s Cooking for a Cause is a hands-on cooking class open to corporate groups. Led by our talented OzHarvest chefs, teams get busy in the kitchen transforming rescued ingredients into gourmet meals, which then get delivered to local charities.
Cooking For A Cause in Brisbane is currently being held in the heart of fresh produce, The Fresh Centre Kitchen within the Rocklea Markets precinct. Against a backdrop of the hustle and bustle of the market, your team will create amazing results in the on-site commercial kitchen!
Group size: 8 to 16 people (maximum)
Cost: $175 p/person – tax deductible.
