OzHarvest Market Waterloo FAQs
When is the OzHarvest Waterloo Market open?
Friday, Saturday, Sunday, Monday – open from 10am – 2pm.
Can I access the market more than one day a week?
As this is a free community initiative, we would love to be able to provide nourishment and food to as many people in need as possible in the Waterloo community as well as people from outside of Waterloo.
We ask that customers please respect our philosophy of taking what you need and giving if you can, and access the Market one day, out of the four opening days to be able to share food with others.
The OzHarvest Market philosophy is about taking what you need, and giving if you can. OzHarvest is a completely charitable organisation that depends on the generosity of donors and partners to be able to Nourish Our Country. We thank you for respecting our values to share with others in the community
Do I collect a pre-made hamper or can I shop for what I need?
During Covid, we would like to manage health and safety of our customers and therefore we will be offering hampers for pick up similar to those we have distributed at OzHarvest’s Pop Up Hamper Hubs – containing dry goods and staples like rice, pasta, oats, milk and canned foods plus some fresh fruit and veg.
If you choose to walk through, you will experience “shopping” at the Market with our volunteers guiding you through our unique OzHarvest Market experience. There will be a limited number of items per customer to ensure food is fairly distributed throughout the course of the four days.
Do I have to wait / queue to get in?
There will likely be a wait to access the Market, we ask for your patience.
Will the food be free?
Thanks to City of Sydney funding, we will be ordering purchased food based on the needs of the community. The food will be free and there will be a limit per person on how many items can be accessed. The food will transition to a food rescue model once funding has run out, which could offer a less consistent supply of food.
What kind of food will be stocked at the market?
There will be a range of dry goods and staples like pasta, rice, muesli, oats, milk, canned foods, fresh fruit, vegetables, cooked meals and some drinks.
Can I choose the food that I receive?
To share the love, we will provide a limit on the number of items and our volunteers are there to assist.
Is there a limit of food that I can take?
To share the love with all our customers and clientele, there is no need to come early in the morning to line up, as there will be food available from 10 – 2pm across Friday, Saturday, Sunday and Monday. Each customer will be able to access a bag of food that can last about 1 week.
Do I need to bring my own shopping bag?
Yes Please! Our OzHarvest Market is a plastic-bag free store, and we don’t have bags for sale, so you must bring your own bag each time to take your fresh food home.
What is the market shopping experience?
Our amazing yellow army of volunteers will be able to assist you in your shop through a deli style system. Simply ask what produce you would like and they will be there to assist you in filling your bag. In order to adhere to food safety standards, our volunteers will be wearing gloves to handle the food.
Do I need identification?
No.
Do I have to live in Waterloo?
The Waterloo Market is a collaboration by the City of Sydney and OzHarvest working closely with the Waterloo Community. It is supported by NSW Land and Housing. The service is for Waterloo and surrounding residents as well as people from other communities finding themselves in hardship and who may need access to food relief.
We welcome all people from all backgrounds and from different communities to visit the OzHarvest Market in Waterloo.
What’s the closest public transport?
Redfern Train Station is the closest station.
Who is running the market?
We have an OzHarvest Market Manager and a team of volunteers who will be at the market each of the opening days.
