OzHarvest Canberra started rescuing food in 2008. With two yellow vans, the team rescues over 7,000 kgs of surplus food, delivering nearly 22,000 meals every week to people in need throughout the region.
COVID-19 saw a drastic increase in demand for food relief in the Canberra and Queanbeyan region. In response, OzHarvest Canberra launched a Cooked Meals Pilot Program to support the local community. By working in partnership with the National Convention Centre, OzHarvest were able to source ready-cooked meals and distribute them on a weekly basis to aid agencies to support the need of their clients for nourishing meals. This program will continue to run until the end of June 2021.
NEST is our six-week nutrition and health education program which supports vulnerable communities by teaching adults simple and easy ways to cook and eat healthier on a tight budget. Workshops include nutrition and food literacy activities, cooking lessons, and culminates in the sharing of a meal together.
FEAST (Food Education and Sustainability Training) is a curriculum aligned program aimed at year 5 and 6 students. FEAST runs for 7-10 weeks and is a STEM project-based learning program focusing on food and sustainability. The teacher-led program can be adapted and changed to suit your school’s needs.
Like any good FEAST, it’s designed to be fun, engaging and filled with good food.
