OzHarvest South Australia Celebrates 15 Million Meal Milestone
by OzAdmin
OzHarvest South Australia have a lot to celebrate with the delivery of 15 million meals and a new home in Hindmarsh, Adelaide. With the warehouse space doubled, the team can continue to expand food rescue operations.
OzHarvest SA State Manager, Bernardo Tobias said the move was an important step to meet the ever-increasing need for food relief. “The ongoing effect of COVID-19 has seen demand for our services go through the roof, as so many people are turning to charities for the first time in their lives. We’re currently delivering around 40,000 meals a week to support vulnerable communities.”
“Reaching 15 million meals is a major milestone which is the result of a huge community effort, including amazing OzHarvest drivers, the team in the office, our incredible yellow army of more than 230 volunteers, and ongoing support from corporate partners, food donors and the charities we support. In just eleven years, the team has saved more than 5,100 tonnes of surplus food from ending up in landfill and distributed it to help feed locals in need.”
OzHarvest relies on regular food donations from more than 100 local businesses, including National Food Rescue Partner Woolworths who provide a regular supply of fresh and nutritious food to help feed people in need across the region.
Karl Weber, Woolworths South Australia General Manager, said, “As today’s fresh food people, our passion and respect for food is an essential part of who we are, and what we do. Our commitment to identify and divert surplus fresh food to OzHarvest for local charities who help feed those in need, is a great example of how a little good everyday can make a big difference.”
OzHarvest South Australia’s education teams have also been hard at work. With few lockdowns in the state, the NEST and Nourish programs have been able to continue bringing people together to learn new skills. Since starting new courses in August, the NEST team have been working non-stop. With three courses already completed, they have just begun another three, one of which is the Youth NEST Program pilot! South Australia’s Nourish program is now in its eleventh week. 10 students have already had the opportunity to work with industry professionals to learn new skills in Hospitality and Kitchen Operations. They have just finished up their barista training with a pop-up cafe and will be graduating in no time!
To keep OzHarvest’s wheels turning and help feed vulnerable communities, donate now at ozharvest.org. For every $1 donated, OzHarvest is able to deliver two meals to people in need.
