OzHarvest WA saves two million kilograms of food from landfill

The fight against food waste reached a major milestone in May as OzHarvest WA rescued its two millionth kilogram of food since launching in December 2014. The landmark collection was made from national partner Woolworths at their Subiaco Square store.

Jennifer Keen, OzHarvest WA State Manager explained how this staggering amount had been saved from landfill in just over three years, thanks to the tremendous support from Woolworths and other businesses donating quality surplus food across the city.

“Our rescued food program has grown rapidly since WA operations began in late 2014, with more than 200 local businesses donating an average of 20 tonnes of food each week. This huge milestone has been made possible by working with Woolworths and other Perth businesses committed to stopping good food going to waste and getting it to people in need.”

“Saving two million kilograms of food from landfill is also significant for the environment as it equates to over four million kilograms of carbon emissions which create harmful greenhouse gases contributing to climate change.”

Woolworths Subiaco Square Store Manager, Inder Toor said Woolworths is committed to reducing food waste to landfill.

“To help meet this commitment we are proud to partner with OzHarvest to ensure the food that cannot be sold in our supermarkets goes to feeding people in need.

“Through the donation of food rescued from our stores in Perth and nationally, as well as donations of money from the business and our customers, Woolworths is committed to OzHarvest’s national expansion. We’re proud to have helped OzHarvest WA to deliver millions of meals over the past year.”

Other local food donors include the new Optus Stadium and Brownes Dairy who have all embraced OzHarvest’s purpose to Nourish our Country, regularly donating nutritious food to allow the equivalent of two million meals to be delivered to more than 80 charities across Perth and the Greater Metropolitan region.

With Australians throwing out an estimated five million tonnes of food each year costing the nation $20 billion annually, OzHarvest and their 3,000 food donors are playing a vital role in addressing this issue.
