DONATEFood Rescue
Launching in 2014, OzHarvest Cairns delivers 7,000 meals a week, diverting thousands of kilograms of perfectly delicious food away from landfill and protecting our planet from the harmful effects of food waste. Our big yellow van is on the road Monday to Friday across Cairns, Port Douglas, and the Atherton Tablelands including Mossman and Mareeba, and is at Rusty’s Markets every Sunday.
Food Relief during COVID-19
To meet the increased need for food due to COVID-19, the Cairns team worked with local business Tropic Spirit Catering to create and distribute nearly 3,200 cooked meals to vulnerable communities. For the first time, purchased food has supplemented rescued food volumes allowing an extra 25,000 meals to be delivered between May and September. Increasing our food rescue run from 3.5 days to 4.5 days a week has enabled food to be distributed beyond Cairns, to reach vulnerable communities in Mossman, Mareeba and Port Douglas.
Volunteer
Our yellow army is made up of over 30 volunteers in Cairns, with volunteer activities including: assisting our drivers with weekday food rescue in our yellow van; rescuing food as a team from Rusty’s Markets on Sundays; and educating and engaging with our community across sustainability themes. We can’t do what we do without the support of our incredible volunteers in Cairns!
